Abstract
The British Press (1803-1826) was a daily newspaper founded in January 1803 in opposition to The Morning Post, with a conservative orientation. It printed the latest news, from home and abroad, for a London readership, and provided early journalistic employment for Charles Dickens.
The file consists of the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) text in XML format for one year of The British Press; or, Morning Literary Adviser. The full digitised newspaper comprises 26 January 1803-31 October 1826. Full holdings are as follows (early holdings are very incomplete): 1803-1826 (Very incomplete) Holdings: no.1, etc (1,26 Jan.-7 July 1803; 3 Jan.,20,26 March,2,4,11,12,16,19,27 April,1 May 1804-31 Dec.1810; 15,19 Feb.,15,17,20-22,28 June,20 Nov.1811; 25 May 1812; 5,10,20 Sept.1814; 3 March,5 Aug.,6-8,29 Sept.,3,10 Oct.,14,15,28,30 Dec.1815; 11,14-21,23,25,27 May,12 Nov.1816; 25 Dec.1817; 1 Jan.1818-31 Oct.1826). The British Newspaper Archive pages images are behind a paywall, but in 2021 the paywall is expected to be lifted for this title and eventually all the newspapers we are digitising under the Heritage Made Digital programme.
