Preparing for the British Library’s Medieval Women Exhibition (PhD Placement)
The Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts section at the British Library curates the extensive national collection of British and European manuscripts dating from Antiquity to 1600. The section is very active in its efforts to make these collections accessible through activities such as cataloguing, digitisation, social media and exhibitions. Curators in the section have led major Library exhibitions including Elizabeth & Mary (2021-22), Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms (2018-19) and Harry Potter: A History of Magic (2017-18). Currently the section is developing a major exhibition on Medieval Women (working title), for the Library larger exhibition gallery scheduled in October 2024 – February 2025. This exhibition will focus on recovering medieval women’s voices, visions and experiences. It will tell their history through their own words, show them through their own images, and uncover their lives through original documents and objects. A wide variety of materials will be displayed which in some way reveal the agency of medieval women, whether as authors, artists, patrons, daughters, wives, mothers, leaders, workers, makers, traders and more. The exhibition will reveal a rich and complex picture of medieval women and their world, full of colourful characters and intriguing stories.
