Open and Engaged Conference 2024 - Empowering Communities to Thrive in Open Scholarship

Open and Engaged 2024: Empowering Communities to Thrive in Open Scholarship will centre leveraging the power of communities in the axis of open scholarship, open infrastructure, emerging technologies, collections as data, equity and integrity, skills development and sustainable models to elevate research of all kinds for the public good. We take a cross sectoral approach to the conference programme – unifying around shared-values for openness – by reflecting on practices within research libraries both in higher education and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) sectors as well as the national and public libraries.

Professor Shanahan shared his journey from high-energy physics to bioinformatics and open science, stressing the importance of equitable access to research resources and the challenges faced by researchers in low and middle-income countries. He advocated for clear communication and understanding of vocabulary in cross-disciplinary collaborations. Professor Winters discussed her path from academic publishing to digital humanities, emphasising the value of open scholarship in various academic contributions, including data sets and digital projects. She highlighted the importance of recognising all contributors' roles and the need for responsible scholarship that considers legal and ethical constraints. The panellists agreed on the significance of building relationships, understanding power dynamics, and ensuring equitable access and recognition in open scholarship. They called for better funding, institutional support, and acknowledgment of the diverse contributions to research.
