The reports cover collaborative research projects and PhD research, as well as research done in the course of regular Library activities, such as exhibitions and conservation.

Item type:Research report, British Library Research Report 2020–21(2022)British LibraryThis fifth annual research report has a particular emphasis on digital research, with features on crowdsourcing, international collaborations in digital scholarship and digitising our collections. A highlight this year was the return of exhibitions at our St Pancras site in London. You can read about the research that informed three exhibitions that took place this year, as well as projects that will feed in to future shows. Another theme in this report is the strength of our partnerships with organisations in a wide range of sectors. These include the Library's involvement in the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Independent Research Organisations Consortium of cultural and heritage organisations, the renewal of partnerships with the government's Chevening Fellowship programme and Wikimedia UK, and a new collaboration with the National Trust.8 5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Regular readers will know that our reports reflect the breadth of research undertaken by our staff, students, fellows and collaborators during the previous academic year, in this case October 2019 to September 2020. This was a year of momentous change for many of us. The effects of national lockdowns, travel restrictions and the ability to access and research our physical collections, or collaborate safely in person, presented a great challenge. But it was also an opportunity to rethink how we do research effectively together when apart. Research is central to the work of the British Library, permeating what we do as an organisation and shaping what we are able to offer to all our users, collaborators and audiences. Reflecting on last year, I would normally highlight how we provide access to our collections and resources to researchers on site and online. As I write this during a global pandemic, when throughout lockdown researchers and public have been unable to use our physical spaces, it is particularly timely to signal how our own research also underpins growth in the remote discovery, access and use of our digital collections.4 6
