Improving Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Postgraduate Development at the British (PhD Placement)
Improving Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Postgraduate Development at the British (PhD Placement)
There are a number of known equality, diversity and inclusion needs in postgraduate communities across academia and the broader GLAM sector. There is disproportionately low participation of UK Black, Asian and non-white minority ethnic individuals in arts and humanities doctoral research and cultural, heritage and library sectors due to a range of systemic factors. Disabled students, mature students, and those with caring responsibilities or young families also face a range of systemic barriers to progress. While not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act (2010), socio-economic background is known to have an impact on student experience and well-being, particularly when combined with other risk factors for poor mental health such as isolation, or work-life balance challenges. Despite this, there is an ongoing lack of sector-wide research and accessible information around postgraduate social backgrounds, identities and potential barriers to progress. The placement students, working alongside the Research & Postgraduate Development Manager, will help create and communicate research into equality, diversity and inclusion issues and actions that will not only improve the support of postgraduate students at the Library, but also feed into important changes that need to occur within the infrastructure of the cultural sector, beyond cultural programming.
