Abstract

In this audio walking tour – consisting of ten 10-minute episodes – we explore the streets of Marx’s London, the sites where Karl Marx lived and worked in his 34 years in Britain’s capital. This episode considers the Marx family's time at the British Museum. Guided by the historian Thomas Jones, we track Marx’s life and times from Leicester Street to Highgate Cemetery, and in the process – 200 years on from his birth – we reflect on the continuing resonance of his ideas. The walking tour features interviews with experts on Marx’s life and times, including Rosemary Ashton, Emeritus Professor of English at University College London; David McLellan, Emeritus Professor of Political Theory at the University of Kent; Gareth Stedman Jones, Professor of the History of Ideas at Queen Mary, University of London; Diana Siclovan, Research Information and Communications Officer in the Collections Department at the British Library; and John Shepperd of the Highgate Cemetery Trust.
