Additional information
This dataset contains full text and metadata after processing by the Alto2Text pipeline created by the Living with Machines Project. The pipeline took as its input the highly verbose AltoXML files of the same newspaper titles and converted them into the more readable plain text format for the benefit of readers and researchers. It contains plaintext for one year of Stockton Herald, South Durham and Cleveland Advertiser. The full digitised newspapers comprises no. 1-1882 (10 July 1858-1 Oct. 1892) (Stockton Herald, South Durham and Cleveland Advertiser.), no. 1883-3684 (8 Oct. 1892-27 April 1918) (Stockton & Thornaby Herald and South Durham Advertiser). The newspaper continued beyond 1901, but this has not been included in this dataset due to copyright considerations. The digitised page images for years 1858 - 1918 are available on the British Newspaper Archive website, https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/stockton-herald-south-durham-and-cleveland-advertiser The British Newspaper Archive pages images are behind a paywall, but from March 2021 the paywall will be lifted and some of these images will be free to view.
