Abstract
The Sun was a daily evening newspaper founded in 1792 with the support of then Prime Minister, William Pitt, and his Tory government. By the mid-1830s the politics of the newspaper had shifted, and it was advocating liberal and free trade principles. Ran 1792-1871, with dataset covering 1801-1871.

This dataset contains full text and metadata after processing by the Alto2Text pipeline created by the Living with Machines Project. The pipeline took as its input the highly verbose AltoXML files of the same newspaper titles and converted them into the more readable plain text format for the benefit of readers and researchers. It contains plaintext for one year of The Sun. The full digitised newspaper comprises no.2584-24555 (1 Jan.1801 - 25 Feb.1871). The digitised page images are available on the British Newspaper Archive website, https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/sun-london The British Newspaper Archive pages images are behind a paywall, but in 2021 the paywall is expected to be lifted for this title and eventually all the newspapers we are digitising under the Heritage Made Digital programme.
