Abstract
The British Press (1803-1826) was a daily newspaper founded in January 1803 in opposition to The Morning Post, with a conservative orientation. It printed the latest news, from home and abroad, for a London readership, and provided early journalistic employment for Charles Dickens.

This dataset contains full text and metadata after processing by the Alto2Text pipeline created by the Living with Machines Project. The pipeline took as its input the highly verbose AltoXML files of the same newspaper titles and converted them into the more readable plain text format for the benefit of readers and researchers. It contains plaintext for one year of The British Press; or, Morning Literary Adviser. The full digitised newspaper comprises 26 January 1803-31 October 1826. The digitised page images are available on the British Newspaper Archive website, https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/british-press. The British Newspaper Archive pages images are behind a paywall, but in 2021 the paywall is expected to be lifted for this title and eventually all the newspapers we are digitising under the Heritage Made Digital programme.
