Abstract
PRESENT knowledge of the personnel in the offices of the Secretaries of State is dependent upon the pioneering work of J. C. Sainty whose researches provide an essential foundation for historical study of this period. In the interests of completeness, this note is intended to fill in several gaps for the early eighteenth century from information contained in the manuscripts of Charles Spencer, third Earl of Sunderland and John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough.
