Abstract
Two manuscript copies of a 1437 treatise on medical astronomy are by Ralph Hoby, Franciscan of Hereford and Oxford: Wolfenbà¼ttel, Herzog August Bibliothek Cod. Guelf. 51. 9. Aug. 4º, ff. 123-33 (W), and London , British Library Harley MS. 3542, ff. 103-10 (H). The text in W occurs in a discrete booklet, carefully written in the mid-fifteenth century. In H it is one text of many in two carelessly written quires of medical and topographical writing from the second half of the fifteenth century. Although the two versions of the Hoby treatise are related, each manuscript provides information not found in the other. The apparent association of the booklet in W with the English royal physician Roger Marchall (fl. 1436-77) sheds light on the early reception of the text as well as on the provenance of W.
