Abstract
The British Library collection includes a vast quantity of born-digital content and digitised material. It incorporates a range of different types of content, many of which have no analogue equivalent. Content files are stored on physical hardware, but the intellectual content itself is intangible. This intangibility presents numerous challenges, particularly at scale and with a highly heterogeneous collection.
Digital Preservation ensures that, despite these challenges, digital collection content is retrievable, authentic, has integrity, and is accessible over time for current and future users. This is more than just storage: it is a continuous endeavor that is integrated into organisational and technological workflows across the entire digital collection lifecycle, from acquisition to access.
This Digital Preservation Policy outlines the principles we follow to ensure successful preservation of British Library digital collections over time. It is one of the four policies in the British Library Digital Collection Management Policy Framework.
