Abstract
The Hidden REF shines a light on the people, processes, and outputs that quietly power research but rarely receive formal recognition. Moving beyond traditional metrics, it celebrates the full ecosystem of contribution, from software and datasets to technical expertise and professional support roles. Central to this is the growing importance of Non-Traditional Outputs (NTOs), which capture the real, often invisible, substance of how research is created, shared, and sustained. This talk explores how recognising NTOs not only reflects the true nature of modern research, but also helps build a more inclusive, accurate, and ultimately more excellent research system.
