Abstract
A.W. Pollard, a keeper of printed books at the British Museum at the beginning of last century and an important Shakespearean scholar in his own right, remarked that one of the incentives to his career as a published writer was the low pay of the curator. So the simple way to promote research would be to reduce wages.
