Abstract
A comparative study of several manuscripts of Leandro Moratin's La mogigata, with particular reference to that presented by the author in the summer of 1804 to Elizabeth, Lady Holland. Drawing on revelations in the original manuscript of her journal (BL, Add. MS. 51931), which is much fuller than the edition published by Ilchester in 1910, the study offers a new perspective on the mindset, motivations and actions of Moratin in 1804 and on the complex early history of this play.
