Abstract
This article aims to systematize and briefly analyse the collection of books printed at Portuguese presses which once belonged to Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753). Portuguese books (or Portuguese printing) are here defined as early books and other materials printed in Portugal (including overseas territories during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) regardless of whether the authors are Portuguese or foreign and whether the works are written in Portuguese or another language (Latin, Spanish and Italian). Deliberately out of scope are books by Portuguese authors printed at other European presses, of which Sloane also owned a considerable number. The Sloane Printed Books Catalogue was the starting point for the study. From this database the author searched all relevant information, analysed several features of the data (Appendix A) and composed a list (Appendix B) that reunites all the Portuguese printed titles in Sloane’s personal library.
