A manuscript of poems by Robert Sidney: some early impressions

IN January of this year the British Library, with the aid of generous grants from the Pilgrim Trust and the Radcliffe Trust, purchased from an unrevealed source through Messrs. Sotheby's an autograph manuscript, now numbered Additional MS. 58435, comprising sonnets, pastorals, songs, and epigrams composed by Robert Sidney (1563-1626), Earl of Leicester. The rediscovery of this long-lost body of poems constitutes an event of considerable importance for Elizabethan studies since, quite apart from their intrinsic merit, they issue from the very heart of the Elizabethan literary renaissance. The present article is intended to celebrate the acquisition of the manuscript for the nation with some preliminary bibliographical and critical observations that it is hoped will suggest further lines of inquiry, and by the publication for the first time of a small number of Sidney's poems, supplemented by a brief commentary.

IN 1973 the Department of Printed Books of the British Library, Reference Division, acquired a collection of some ninety separate pieces of occasional verse in Latin and German, mainly epithalamia, published in Leipzig between 1608 and 1630. Amongst these are four relating to the composer Johann Hermann Schein (born 1586, Thomaskantor in Leipzig a century before Bach, from 1616 until his death in 1630) which do not seem to be recorded elsewhere. Two were published in celebration of Schein's second marriage in 1625, and two (from 1627 and 1629) contain poems by him, the second being in celebration of the wedding of Heinrich Schiitz's youngest brother.

English Bookbindings added to the Department of Printed Books 1963 to 1974

THE most important acquisition of bookbindings during this period has unquestionably been that of the Henry Davis Collection. It is, indeed, far the most important gift of this nature that the Department has ever received, being almost the whole of one of the three great collections of bookbindings made in England during this century, the others being those of Major J.R. Abbey and of the Broxbourne Library formed by Albert Ehrman.

Some illustrated Jain manuscripts

THE Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books has recently acquired several illustrated Jain manuscripts of great interest. The earliest is the Uttarddhyayanasutra, one of the four Mulasutras of the Svetambara Canon. The scribe provided no colophon: but the miniatures, in the Early Western Indian style, fix the date of the manuscript as the early sixteenth century and its provenance as Gujarat or southern Rajasthan, in western India. The Prakrit text of the Sutra is accompanied by an anonymous vacurni in Sanskrit; the Department already possesses one other manuscript of this commentary. Or. 2095. The new manuscript has 131 folios in all, measuring 26 x 11 cm. In common with most Hindu and Jain manuscripts of this date, which still retain the ancient format of palm-leaf manuscripts, the text is written parallel to the longer side of the paper folios, which were left unbound. The Prakrit text is written in Jain Ndgari script in the centre of each folio, with the Sanskrit commentary, written in much smaller characters, above and below. Illustrated examples of the Uttarddhyayanasutra are far from numerous - few are to be found outside India and the present manuscript is the first to be acquired by the Department. It has been numbered Or. 13362.

BY 1867 the collection of Japanese printed books and manuscripts in the British Museum Numbered barely three hundred items whereas, for example, that of printed books alone in Hebrew ran to well over ten thousand. This relatively small collection of Japanese Materials in what were then two sections of the British Museum (but today form part of the British Library) is some measure of just how little was yet known about this ancient, exotic, and populous civilization. However, this deficiency was shortly to be remedied to quite an extent by the purchase from Alexander von Siebold in July 1868 of 1,088 distinct Japanese works in 3,441 volumes (printed books, manuscripts, charts, and maps).At the time the vendor was serving as a Japanese interpreter to the British Legation at Edo (present-day Tokyo).
