The British Library Solidarity collection is the second largest repository of Polish independent publications in the United Kingdom. Its origins date back to the late 1970s when the British Library acquired the first issues of underground newsletters and periodicals released by opposition groups. The collection consists of books, periodicals and ephemeral publications and demonstrates the strength, proliferation and domestic and international impact of underground publishing in Poland from 1976 to 1989. Female voices were often excluded from the mainstream Solidarity historiography, given that the trade union’s governance was male-dominated. The underestimation of women’s roles has been largely the result of a gender-blind approach that this placement will help to address through updating the existing collection database and presenting a report based on findings. The purpose of the placement is to critically access the collection of monographs and ephemera to locate women’s perspectives and to increase the visibility of this marginalised group. His work has the potential to lay the groundwork for a future research project into women’s activism in the BL’s Slavic collections. Funder(s): British Library PhD Placement Bursary.
