Abstract
A discussion of the iconic first (1855) edition of Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, of which the British Library holds a rare early copy, and its place in the author's literary development. Following the sesquicentenial anniversary of the work's publication, the experience of reading this celebrated volume in print is shown in a fresh context by the range of new online resources, databases, and hypertext archives currently being developed in the United States.
