The Keyes Papers at the British Library

2007

Abstract

This article describes the papers and career of Roger Keyes (1872-1945), one of the most important naval figures of the first part of the twentieth century. The papers cover his long career from pre-World War One submarine service, through active service in World War One, the tense inter-war years, his attempts to maintain the Royal Navy's control of its own aircraft, and his role in establishing the commando forces used in combined operations during World War Two. The papers shed light on the major figures and events of the period, as well as showing another side to the man in the large amount of personal correspondence contained in the collection.
