Enhancing access to manuscripts and archives in the French language (PhD Placement)

This placement works with the British Library’s archives and manuscript collections and to help make French language material more accessible to researchers and members of the public. The collections managed by the Modern Archives and Manuscripts Team date from the 17th century to the mid-20th century and contain significant original manuscript material in a number of European languages. Much of this material has been catalogued, but would benefit from the creation of new user-focused collection guides and promotion to a wider audience through blogs and social media. The PhD student will undertake research into the Modern Archive and Manuscript collections (1601-1950) and to write a collection guide for manuscript material in the French language. These collections contain a wealth of exciting historical, scientific, political, and literary material. They include letters by French writers and historical figures such as Voltaire and George Sand, Napoleon and the Chevalier d’à‰on. Funder(s): AHRC Open-Oxford-Cambridge DTP.

    The British Library holds a diverse range of manuscripts and handwritten documents in French, covering a wide variety of subject matter from across the Francophone world. This guide provides a general overview of French manuscript material created between 1600 and around 1950. The collection is particularly rich in sources for political and diplomatic history, including Royal history, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic era, as well as in literary and scientific manuscripts from across the centuries.
