British Library 3D Models
This collection comprises 45 3D models of British Library collection items created between 2015-2023. The models reflect the diversity of objects in the Library’s collections, from Hebrew manuscripts to Chinese Oracle Bones, and include highlights such as Jane Austen’s writing desk and the Constance Graduale – the earliest extant book of printed music using moveable type. Out of the 45 records, 29 items have models to downloads, while 16 are metadata only records. The 3D models are available for download in four different formats: GLB, GLTF, USDZ or OBJ. They are out of copyright and can be used under a CC BY licence. All the British Library's models are also available on Sketchfab (https://sketchfab.com/britishlibrary).

Bardin, etc. London: Harrison & Co., 1783. 1 globe: hand coloured; 23 cm. in diameter. This globe forms a pair with the terrestrial globe at Maps G.8.b. This globe by Gabriel Wright and William Bardin, together with its terrestrial partner, formed part of an interesting publicity strategy. A new monthly serial, The Geographical Magazine; Or a New Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography, was launched in January 1782. As a promotional inducement, subscribers were offered a pair of globes ‘gratis’. After buying the ?rst twenty editions readers could acquire a terrestrial globe, and after the fortieth edition they could claim its celestial partner. Oracle bones were animal bones, usually ox shoulder bones or the underside of turtle shells, used for divination rituals in ancient China. Dating to the Shang dynasty (c. 1600 – 1050 BC), they bear the earliest extant form of Chinese writing and are the oldest items held in the British Library. This model was created for a British Library project on oracle bones that formed part of the UK-China Cultural Exchange 2015, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Amsterdam: Willem Janszoon Blaeu, 1606 (1621). 1 globe : hand coloured; 13.5 cm. in diameter. This globe by Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was originally published in 1606 but has been revised to include the discoveries at the tip of South America in 1616 by the Dutchmen Willem Schouten (active 1590–1618) and Jacob Le Maire (1585–1616). Item type:3D image, Great Omar Jewelled Bookbinding, C.188.c.27(2023-03-17)British LibraryAn elaborately gold tooled, jewelled and onlaid bookbinding covering an 1884 Boston [Mass] edition of Rubà¡iyà¡t of Omar Khayyà¡m, the astronomer-poet of Persia, rendered into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald, with an accompaniment of drawings by Elihu Vedder; a bequest to the British Library by Mr & Mrs Stanley Bray in 2005. The bookbinding firm of Sangorski & Sutcliffe were famous for their jewelled bookbindings. Their first binding (created 1909-1911) on this edition of the Rubà¡iyà¡t was lost on the Titanic as it was being exported to the U.S.A. in 1912. The binding was was recreated by Sutcliffe’s nephew, binder Stanley Bray, from 1932 to 1939 but was destroyed in the London Blitz of 1941. Bray created a third jewelled binding from 1985 taking 4 years of his retirement. Item type:3D image, JG Doppelmayr, Celestial Globe, 1728, Maps G.36a(2019-12-09)British LibraryGlobus Coelestis Novus Nuremberg: Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, 1728. 1 globe : hand coloured, mounted on a four-legged wooden stand with a metal meridian ring and an hour ring ; 31 cm. in diameter. Forms a pair with the terrestrial globe at Maps G.36.b. Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr’s (1677-1750) celestial globe was accurate for the epoch 1730 and drew on the star catalogue of Johannes Hevelius of 1690. Also depicted are the paths of several comets observed by Hevelius, Johann Kepler, Giovanni Cassini and John Flamsteed. There were other German globe-makers in the early 1700s but Doppelmayr’s globes dominated the German market until the end of the eighteenth century.
