British Library 3D Models
This collection comprises 45 3D models of British Library collection items created between 2015-2023. The models reflect the diversity of objects in the Library’s collections, from Hebrew manuscripts to Chinese Oracle Bones, and include highlights such as Jane Austen’s writing desk and the Constance Graduale – the earliest extant book of printed music using moveable type. Out of the 45 records, 29 items have models to downloads, while 16 are metadata only records. The 3D models are available for download in four different formats: GLB, GLTF, USDZ or OBJ. They are out of copyright and can be used under a CC BY licence. All the British Library's models are also available on Sketchfab (https://sketchfab.com/britishlibrary).

Item type:3D image, Oracle Bone, Or 7694/1988 Part 1(2016-03-26)British LibraryAn inscribed oracle bone (jia gu 甲骨) from the Couling-Chalfant collection at the British Library. Oracle bones were animal bones, usually ox shoulder bones or the underside of turtle shells, used for divination rituals in ancient China. Dating to the Shang dynasty (c. 1600 – 1050 BC), they bear the earliest extant form of Chinese writing and are the oldest items held in the British Library. This model was created for a British Library project on oracle bones that formed part of the UK-China Cultural Exchange 2015, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Item type:3D image, Brass Block(2018-03-15)British LibraryA 'block' is a cast in brass. One of a multitude of blocks used to impress gold decoration in patterns and designs on book covers. Some block designs signify collections (such as the Cottons or Harleys) much like individual coats of arms relate to hereditary lines. Other blocks are purely decorative. The block is positioned and fastened into a heated platen on a blocking machine. After reaching the correct temperature, the operator applies gold leaf or gold foil (powdered gold on a plastic film) onto the surface to be blocked, then aligns the surface under the platen. At the pull of a lever, the surface rises to meet the block and an impression is made. The trick is to get the right temperature and impression pressure. Nuremberg, 1728. 1 globe, 31 cm. in diameter, mounted on a four-legged wooden stand with a meridian ring and hour ring. The terrestrial globe displays many of the recent discoveries of the early eighteenth century, but it also pays homage to several important explorers of the past. Many tracks are shown, including those of Magellan, Le Maire, Tasman and Dampier, as well as the very recent journey of the Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen (1659–1729), who discovered Easter Island in 1722 during an unsuccessful expedition to ?nd the mythical great southern continent. Forms a pair with Johann Doppelmayr’s celestial globe, 1728 (Maps G.36.a.). Wright, and made by W. Bardin, etc. London: Harrison & Co., 1783. 1 globe: hand coloured, 23 cm. in diameter. This globe forms a pair with the celestial globe at Maps G.8.a. The globes made by Gabriel Wright (active 1782–1803) and his collaborator William Bardin (active 1775–98) marked a new phase in English globe-making that continued well into the nineteenth century. Item type:3D image, Jane Austen's Desk (open view 2), Add 86841(2018-03-16)British LibraryA wooden writing desk used by Jane Austen which was given to her by her father in 1794. This portable ‘writing-box’ opens to provide a slope on which to write. It has various compartments, including a space for an ink pot and a lockable drawer for paper and valuables. When Austen died in 1817, aged 41, the desk was inherited by her sister Cassandra. It was later passed down through her eldest brother’s family. In 1999, Joan Austen-Leigh, Jane Austen’s great-great-great-niece, generously presented it to the British Library. The inscription on the reverse of this particular bone records a lunar eclipse, which can be precisely dated to the night of 27 December 1192 BC. This model was created for a British Library project on oracle bones that formed part of the UK-China Cultural Exchange 2015, supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. This globe was first produced in 1602. It shows a nova in the constellation of Cygnus which Blaeu had personally observed in 1600. The globe forms a pair with the terrestrial globe at Maps G.9.a. This model was created for a 2020 British Library project to digitise globes from its historic map collection.
