Abstract
The Celestial Globe … made by W. Bardin, etc. London: Harrison & Co., 1783. 1 globe: hand coloured; 23 cm. in diameter. This globe forms a pair with the terrestrial globe at Maps G.8.b. This globe by Gabriel Wright and William Bardin, together with its terrestrial partner, formed part of an interesting publicity strategy. A new monthly serial, The Geographical Magazine; Or a New Copious, Compleat and Universal System of Geography, was launched in January 1782. As a promotional inducement, subscribers were offered a pair of globes ‘gratis’. After buying the ?rst twenty editions readers could acquire a terrestrial globe, and after the fortieth edition they could claim its celestial partner. This model was created for a 2020 British Library project to digitise globes from its historic map collection. For enquiries regarding further re-use of these models please contact licensing@bl.uk.
