Abstract
This September, after many years of planning, the Museum Data Service (MDS) was officially launched by Art UK, Collections Trust and the University of Leicester. Built with start-up funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, and now part of AHRC's IDAH portfolio of digital infrastructures, MDS aims to connect and share all the object records across all UK museums, large and small. Project lead Kevin Gosling explains how MDS will be a gamechanger for anyone wanting to use museum collection data, and suggests some national policy gaps that could usefully be plugged to improve everyone's practice.
