Thomas Tuttell, Celestial Globe, 1700, Maps G.53
    (2020-03-23)
    British Library
A celestial globe measuring 36 cm. (14 inches) in diameter, published by Thomas Tuttell (c. 1674–1702) in London, 1700. This globe is identical to a celestial globe made by Joseph Moxon in 1653, except that it includes an additional constellation in the northern hemisphere, Cor Caroli (Heart of Charles), which was named by Sir Charles Scarborough to commemorate the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Tuttell is known to have worked with James Moxon, son of Joseph Moxon, on a book entitled ‘Mathematicks made Easie’ around 1700, and this connection makes it likely that he would have been able to acquire globes by Moxon. This model was created for a 2020 British Library project in partnershp with Cyreal to digitise a number of globes from its historic map collection. Embroidered for Queen Elizabeth I, C.24.b.8
    (2023-03-13)
    British Library
Author Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury, had this copy of his book De antiquitate Britannicae Ecclesiae (London, 1572) specially bound for the Queen, who was known to appreciate embroidered covers. The design on green velvet incorporates a deer park, perhaps a punning reference to Parker’s name, Tudor roses and other flowers. It was probably the work of a professional needle worker.
